i left you in the bay
not wishing to see you again
and knowing that i never would.
you will die in the dark maelstroms
that have opened merely to accept you
into their caves.
i will think of you from time to time,
when i breathe air that you can never breathe again.
these clothes you wear,
i will remember them always,
though they are fogged from the dampness inside my eyelids.
now, i must pretend to be grieved,
to be anxious and distraught at your departure.
i will try to cry, or maybe it will just happen.
the tears will come eventually
to flood the prickly vines that have grown over my cheeks.
